The Department of Sociology seeks applications for a postdoc position. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the project “When and where is it possible for young workers to escape from low-wage jobs? The role of the organizational and regional context for upward wage mobility” financed by the Swedish Research Council.
The postdoctoral project provides evidence on the role of the firm-specific factors for wage dynamics among young people. Specifically, it contributes to research on the role of the composition of firms’ workforce in terms of skills, gender and social background for upward wage mobility among youth. The project utilizes linked employer-employee data from Swedish registers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and carrying out research in collaboration with the PI. The employment contract starts in February 2019 (unless agreed otherwise) for the duration of two years. In order to be qualified for the position, the candidate must have received a doctoral degree in sociology or other related field (including economics, human geography, demography, organisational studies). A precondition is that the applicant has not previously been employed as a Postdoc at Umeå University for more than a year within the same or equivalent discipline. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this time period may be taken into consideration if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade union organizations or similar circumstances.
The main assessment criteria for the appointment are documented research skills and an academic track record. Applicants must be able to analyse longitudinal data and speak and write English fluently. The postdoctoral research fellow will be expected to carry out the work in Umeå and to participate in common departmental activities.
Application should contain:
- a complete CV, including the list of publications
- a research plan (max. 5 pages)
- the applicant’s three representative publications (max. 3)
Applications are accepted via system Varbi until November 30. For further information on the job position, please contact the PI Anna Baranowska-Rataj (anna.baranowska@umu.se).
