RC34 Executive Board meeting

Minutes from the Board Meeting of RC34,

Strasbourg, France, 3 October 2003

In Attendance: Helena Helve (president), Johanna Wyn (vice-president) Henk Vinken (vice-president), Carles Feixa (vice-president), Claire Wallace (Advisory Board), Siyka Kovacheva (Advisory Board).

1. Welcome:
The President Helena Helve welcomed everyone to the meeting.

2. Matters Arising:

• Helena Helve informed the participants that the committee had registered success in the campaign for recruitment of new members and the membership had passed over the 100 mark. As a result the RC34 received a grant from ISA of 600 Euro which went for developing IBYR.

Action points suggested:

To invite members to be more active in sending materials for the bulletin.

• The Moscow training seminar for young youth researchers in 2002 have been a successful activity of the RC34. There have been 150 applications of which only 40 were accepted.

Action points suggested:

To continue search for funding. Up to now the Council of Europe has been contacted, as well as Nordic sources.

Claire Wallace proposed to contact local authorities in prosperous Russian cities which look forward to international contacts and recognition, e.g. Tomsk.

• The Vice-President for Europe Henk Vinken proposed RC34 to develop a toolbox for youth research which to support comparative research.

Action points suggested:

Henk Vinken to contact members with request to send information on the projects they are working on focusing on the methods and instruments. A group dealing with methodological issues to be created within the committee. Deadline December 2003.

• RC34 have good cooperation with other RCs as well as ESA. This is to be strengthened with new common activities.

Action points suggested:

Henk Vinken to contact Jean-Charles Lagree, the organiser of the Youth and Generation stream of ESA to provide information about the results from the session of the ESA conference in Murcia, Spain, held in September 2003. These are to be published on the RC34 Web page.

3. Publication Projects:

• Helena Helve informed the board members that the youth book is progressing well and has to be submitted to Ashgate in November. Publisher for the History of RC34 book has not yet been found.

Action points suggested:

Helena Helve to contact Ladislav Machacek and explore the opportunities for publishing the book in Slovakia.

• Other publications involving RC34:

– Papers of young youth researchers prepared for the next World Congress of ISA in Durban, South Africa, in July 2006 are to be published in a special issue of YOUNG.

– Papers from the Youth and Politics session at the Brisbane Congress of ISA are to be published in the Journal of Youth Studies.

– Henk Vinken and Lynne Chisholm are preparing publication on generation theory.

– A selection of papers from the session organized by Pam Nyllan in Brisbane to be published by Routledge under the title ‘Mixed Cultures and Plural World’.

– The Observatory on Youth and Society in collaboration with the University of Laval, Quebec, Canada is to publish a book on post-communist youth. Ladislav Machacek and Siyka Kovacheva are involved in this work.

Action points suggested:

Carles Feixa to contact YOUNG to prepare an issue on youth research in Latin America.

4. Plans for Other Activities:

• Conferences organized by or with the support of RC34:

– Milan, Italy, September 2004, Carmen Leccardi in the organizing committee

– Oslo, Norway, June 2005, Ola Stafseng in the organizing committee.

– Shanghai, China, 2005, 6th Asian Youth Research Symposium, Songxing Su in the organising committee.

– India, 2006, the 7th Youth Research Symposium, Vinod Chandra in the organizing committee.

– The Lleida seminar is planned to be repeated in Chile but there has not been made any progress on this. Another possible venue is Columbia where there is a very good doctoral program and and a popular journal in childhood and youth.

– Johanna Wyn is to take part in the Congress of the Australian Sociological Association this year.

Action points suggested:

Carles Feixa to continue efforts in this aspect and to prepare information about youth seminars held in Latin America which to be published in IBYR.

Johanna Wyn to make efforts to recruit members of RC34 from Australian youth researchers.
