Pre-CONFERENCE FORUM
Call for proposals 2015
The ASHE Council for International Higher Education (CIHE) will convene its 24th Annual Forum beginning Wednesday morning, November 4th, through noon on Thursday, November 5th, 2015. The theme for this forum is “The Growing Stratification of Higher Education in a Global Perspective: Building a Pathway to Better Societies?” which contributes to the theme of the general conference (Inequality and Higher Education). The differentiation and stratification of higher education in the age of mass higher education is probably the key issue which affects higher education systems around the world. Many previous studies have addressed the experiences and outcomes of higher education in general, but increasing inequalities in the sector, in many (though not all) countries, provide us with a new agenda for research. The 2015 CIHE forum invites critical papers which will discuss such issues as What do we know about the experiences and outcomes of mass and elite segments of higher education for societies and individuals? What are the different experiences of national systems in relation to differentiation and segmentation? Why are some systems more unequal, in their different parts, than others? How does the segmentation of the higher education sector, its institutions, students and faculty, affect growing social inequalities in many societies around the world, or on the contrary, how do rising inequalities in societies stimulate higher education stratification? What is the role of the economic rationales which have underpinned higher education policy in recent decades in rising social inequalities and segmentation of higher education? What are the purposes of the increasingly diverse higher education system, aside from economic/employability ones? What kind of research evidence do we have to reinforce the social mission of higher education for societies and individuals?
The 2015 CIHE forum is aimed at the review and analysis of research on these critical issues developed in economics, sociology, political science, other social sciences, humanities and cross-disciplinarily, in a comparative perspective, as well as at the building of a new agenda for further research and rationale for public policy. The International Forum will engage participants from a wide range of countries in active discussions, to address higher education issues from a global perspective, and to advance knowledge about the practice of higher education internationally. We invite proposals for research and scholarly papers, symposia and roundtable discussions, which fall both within and outside the theme of the forum. Due to the interactive nature of the pre-conference, symposium and roundtable proposals that encourage active participation and generate interest across a broad audience are especially welcome. In order to build greater connections between CIHE and the General Conference, a selected number of CIHE Forum sessions will be scheduled to run concurrently with the General Conference.
All proposals for the International Forum should be submitted until May 1 through the online conference proposal submission process, selecting the COUNCIL FOR INTERNATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION PRE-CONFERENCE. All ASHE members, as well as researchers, practitioners, and students across the world are invited to participate. Direct questions can be addressed to the CIHE Forum Chair Anna Smolentseva.
