2 Doctoral Student Positions in Educational or Social Sciences

The research associate will be member of the Research Project “Young People’s Transitions out of Residential and Foster Care – (TransCare)” funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) (Principal Investigator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ute Karl). TransCare focuses on young people’s transitions from out-of-home care into adulthood with a focus on young people’s experiences, and the factors that hinder or foster their achievement of agency.
The project is assigned to the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Work, Social Pedagogy, and Social Welfare within the RU INSIDE.
The research project includes a survey and different case studies thus bringing together quantitative and qualitative approaches to investigate the question of how young people achieve agency even under difficult conditions. The project draws attention to different institutional settings (residential care, foster care, accompanied living) and their interface to other institutions (such as school, school social work, ambulatory services etc.). The collaborative research project will be conducted by a team of 7 members: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ute Karl, Prof. Dr. Andreas Hadjar (Institute of Education and Society within the Research Unit ECCS), Dr. Thomas Marthaler, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ulla Peters, a Post-Doc and two Doctoral Students. One Doctoral position will be situated at the Institute for Education and Society (InES).
Your Role
- Contribute to desk based research
- Conduct the qualitative case studies (one Phd thesis will focus on transitions from residential care, the other from foster families)
- Write a thesis
- Present results on international conferences and contribute to written publications (English
- Contribute to the dissemination of findings to practitioners and policy makers
- Contribute to project meetings and scientific networking concerning the project

Your Profile
- An outstanding master’s degree or a diploma in educational or social sciences (sociology, transition studies, life course research, social inequality etc.)
- Profound knowledge in qualitative research (biographic analysis, ethnographic research, expert interviews) and basic knowledge in quantitative methods
- Knowledge and interest in young people’s transitions to adult hood, out-of-home-care, vulnerable youth
- Experience and interest in working in a research team
- Excellent command of English and be fluent in at least one of the following two languages: German or French (written and spoken), and in the other language a proficient use
- Competence in working in a collaborative research projec
- Ability to work in an international research team
