In a joint appointment procedure, the University of Bamberg and the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories would like to fill the vacancy, initially limited to a five-year term, of the

Position of the Director of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) and the Professorship (W3) for Longitudinal Education Research

by April 1, 2017 as a civil servant with a limited 5-year tenure.

The position of Director is limited to a five-year term of contract followed by the possibility of reappointment.

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) is a member of the Leibniz Association, which consists of over 80 research and infrastructure facilities in Germany.

The LIfBi is a legally independent research-based infrastructure facility affiliated with the University of Bamberg, conducting research in the field of longitudinal education research. In particular, the responsibility of the Institute is to carry out the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). The main target of this long-term project is to provide representative data about the development of competencies and educational trajectories in Germany. Therefore, the LIfBi closely collaborates with a nationwide network of excellence (NEPS Network). To find further information about LIfBi please visit www.lifbi.de

The Director manages the Institute. He or she is responsible for the long-term strategic development as well as the future orientation of the research and service program and its execution. A close collaboration with the NEPS Network, as the primary support regarding the National Educational Panel Study, will be obligatory. The field of duties includes the initiation of new research projects, the advancement of service offerings and their execution, the public representation of the Institute, and personnel management, as well as the cooperation with partners at universities or other nonuniversity facilities.

Depending on the candidate’s disciplinary expertise, the position advertised will be combined with a chair at the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education or at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration at the University of Bamberg. Candidates will generally be expected to network with educational research facilities at both faculties, with the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS), as well as with main research efforts of the University of Bamberg as a whole.

Furthermore, the professorship entails a teaching load of 2 weekly hours per semester.

Applicants must have international acclaim; they have to provide in-depth knowledge and be nationally as well as internationally renowned in the field of longitudinal education research. The Director is expected to strengthen and raise the profile of the Institute—which was newly founded in 2014—and strategically extend it as well as further international connections. Moreover, he or she should feel obliged to enhance the structures of administration and governance of the Institute.

Experiences with the management of research projects conducted within large research alliances, the acquisition of third-party funding, and the cooperation with leading political figures and associations closely related to politics are further prerequisites.

The relevant qualifications consist of a completed academic degree, pedagogical suitability, a special talent for scientific activities generally proven through the quality of a doctorate, and, in addition to this, further academic achievements. Additional scientific credentials must be certified by a Habilitation or equivalent academic qualification, which may also have been obtained through activities outside of higher education or as part of a junior professorship.

The employment as professor (W3) will initially be restricted to a five-year contract, principally as temporary civil servant. At the moment of attaining the status of a civil servant, applicants must not be older than 52 years of age (for justifiable exceptions see Sec. 10 Par. 3 Sentence 2 Bavarian Higher Education Act).

The faculties aim to increase the percentage of women in research and teaching and, therefore, welcome applications by female scientists. Severely disabled applicants with essentially identical qualifications will be preferentially selected. The University of Bamberg has been certified as a family-friendly university by the Hertie Foundation and, therefore, campaigns for the compatibility of family and professional life. The University of Bamberg is a member of the regional Dual Career Network (DCNN). It supports the partners of newly appointed professors.
