The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research (DIGHR) is committed to the pursuit of equity and social justice in Global Health. It furthers research, teaching, policy and practice around the three main themes of Planetary Health, Global Health and Humanitarianism, and Global Health Foresighting.

The Faculty of Education (FoE) is one of the leading faculties of education in Canada. Through its research, scholarship and innovative programs it enacts its mission of reinventing education for a diverse, complex world and of making education accessible for all. The FoE is home to the Tier I Canada Research Chair Youth, Education and Global Good with a focus on the place of education in the well-being of youth and communities across global contexts.

 

Objective

This Postdoctoral Fellowship will provide financial support to a high-calibre scholar doing postdoctoral research that advances the mission of The Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, in partnership with the Faculty of Education, in the specific area of global community health and well-being education.

 

Value

$50,000 per year plus benefits for up to 24 months, and an annual research travel allowance of $5,000.

 

Description

You will be based at York University, and co-supervised by Professor Kate Tilleczek and Professor James Orbinski. You will work at the Dahdalah Institute for Global Health Research, where you will be provided a work space and appropriate office and administrative support. Teaching opportunities up to a maximum of a 1.0 full course equivalent per year, with payment for any assigned teaching responsibilities may be available.

You will work under the direction of your academic supervisors, and be responsible for:
• Developing and operationalizing a trans-disciplinary strategy for global community health and well-being education;

• Writing applications for funding to support research and educational projects that align with strategic priorities in global community health and well-being education, including the established Borderless Higher Education for Refugees program and Tier I CRC in Youth, Education and Global Good;
• Contributing to the development of the DIGHR/FoE research programs and priorities in global health and humanitarianism, with a particular focus on community well-being education;
• Acting as a key point of synergy between DIGHR and FoE and establishing and supporting new partnerships;
• Co-authoring at least three manuscripts for publication, as well as other forms of research dissemination;
• Offering a number of graduate and undergraduate trans-disciplinary seminars/lectures each year to engage the broader community;
• Attending and actively participating in the Wednesday Trans-disciplinary Global Health Seminar Series at the DIGHR;
• Contributing more widely to the joint work of DIGHR/FoE including the possibility of teaching within FoE.

 

Qualifications and Skills:
• PhD in a discipline relevant to health, wellbeing and education;
• Interest, and preferably, experience in working with/for vulnerable, and migrant populations;
• Excellent interpersonal, written, oral and communication skills;
• Experience writing grants and disseminating research to a range of audiences;
• Openness to interdisciplinary approaches to scholarship and inquiry, and ability to work in interdisciplinary contexts;
• Strong organizational and project management skills;
• Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively.
